Dreamer / Uneksija (2020) is a three-dimensional photographic collage, which consists of several translucent layers. The composition “lives” and changes depending on the viewer’s location and the natural light conditions; new images are formed as the photographs layer up differently when the viewer moves around and reflections change during the day. The work is viewed from outside. The images form fascinating, dreamlike combinations and the signification of the single images gains new nuances. The artists are interested in how we perceive the altered images, how we interpret them. The collage is a kind of psychological game where – along with the images – also different eras, subjects and shapes overlap. The work is an invitation for the viewer to participate in this game.
The piece was made for a window exhibition in the Kuopio Gallery Ars Libera in the summer of 2020 and was shown again in December 2020 / January 2021 in Gallery A2 in Helsinki. In Kuopio the exhibition also included the joint piece Summer night's dream. In Helsinki Salla Vapaavuoris Dream of a Forest was also displayed.
Emma Rönnholm and Salla Vapaavuori (b. 1984) are visual artists based in Helsinki. They work both individually and as a work group. Their common works are often comprehensive, site-specific installations. They are both interested in the ability of art to create surprising encounters and ideas. Their previous common works include the outdoor plant installation ‘Mielipidepalsta’, a room built of crispbread, and a multigenerational class photo. The works examine small and the big social phenomena through surrealistic glasses.
